"I refused to work 9-5, now I work 24/7"

“I refuse to work 9-5, I end up working 24/7”

This quote has been all over the internet, used as a funny business pun. Not gonna lie, I also found it funny because sometimes I get overwhelmed too, by the amount of hours I spend on my business everyday. I am not complaining but I keep on thinking of ways to settle more things with the time I have. Therefore, just two years ago I learnt how to improvise my time management, so that I can be more productive instead of being busy. I joined this one webinar session with Raymond Chou, it was such a great session. The most valuable lesson I learnt was to differentiate between being productive and being busy, and not to forget… to know your priority.

We sometimes get too focused on achieving our goal till we forget the main purpose of achieving it. Having to work 24/7 can be very dreadful. When things get exhausting, you can’t avoid negativity from entering your mind. “When you control your thoughts, you control your emotions'” might be easier said than done. Humans are the most complex creation with the most complex emotions. Emotions can consume us anytime, no matter how hard we try to stay positive. That’s why as much as your goals matter, your mental health also matters, and to achieve the balance between both of these is not by being the busiest.

The trick to becoming a successful businessman or businesswoman is not about being the busiest, but being productive. You can be busy all day, but at the end of the day, it is what you produce that matters. The projects you finish matter more than how many hours you spent on doing it. Do you want to work hard or to work smart? Always choose to work smart. The only way to win is to live like a winner. How? By having good time management.

Being a website consultant and designer can be very overwhelming just like any other businesses do. That’s why I started to learn more about time management, as I was reading hundreds of pages of books about time management, this one matrix hooked me. It is the Eisenhower Decision Matrix. This 4 quadrants matrix that sorts our tasks according to their importance and urgency has incredibly improved my productivity, I could say. This matrix guides us to classify our tasks according to how important it is and how urgent it is. By sorting your tasks according to their importance and urgency, you will be able to find out which of the tasks that you can delegate or not do at all.

When you are able to distinguish between what is important and what is not, you will be able to finish everything on time, discard what is not important and get more things done. As much as you want to deliver the best, we cannot deny that sometimes it gets overwhelming to finish too many tasks which often cause procrastination. Now that you can see which tasks you need to settle first, it will be easier for you to know where to focus on. Everyone has 24 hours per day, we can’t ask for more time of course. It will be ridiculous. Don’t wish for more time, never ask for it. Instead, ask for more energy to do things you can do with that time.
